Charles Freeman, Arabella’s brother and part of Barlow’s regime, arrives on the grounds of Freeman Hall with Justine, Arabella’s lover, and a mysterious newborn child. Justine has been serving disguised as a man in Barlow's regimen alongside Charles. Arabella, who has longed for a baby, does not look too closely. If she did, she might realize the family resemblance. Instead, seeing that Justine has been mortally wounded, she takes the baby as a sign of their undying love and union. Justine's last words before she collapses are, "it's the General's baby." Charles looks on, helpless in the face of his sister's sorrow, his bastard child, and his soon-to-be fallen fellow soldier.Exhibitions
